Zoology Students Receive Duke’s First Doctoral Degrees

Duke awarded its first two doctorate degrees to zoology students Dean Warren Rumbold (left) and Frederick John Holl. Each came to Duke from New York, having earned their bachelor’s degrees at the University of Buffalo. Upon receiving their doctorates, each taught biology before entering the armed forces during World War II. Holl was a major in the Air Force and later was a biology professor at the University of Buffalo. He died in 1972. Rumbold was a Navy commander during World War II and later taught at Ferris Institute in Michigan. He died in 1967.
