Doris Duke, in cap and gown, sets the cornerstone for West Campus

West Campus Cornerstone is Set

The Duke University West Campus cornerstone is ceremonially set by a 15-year-old Doris Duke, the only child of James B. Duke. Chief engineer A. C Lee (left) and Duke Endowment chair G. G. Allen (right) looked on, with hundreds in attendance. The West Union officially opened two years later, on Sept. 25, 1930. Julian Abele, an African-American architect from Philadelphia, designed West Union. The design reflected the South at the time; it was segregated, with separate dining rooms and restroom facilities. The center of student life received an overhaul in the mid 2010s, re-opening in 2016.
