Sarah P. Duke Gardens is Dedicated

It was 85 years ago on this date that The Sarah P. Duke Gardens was dedicated and named to honor the widow of one of the university’s founders, Benjamin N. Duke. With a $20,000 gift from Sarah Duke and the vision of Frederic M. Hanes, a member of the original faculty of Duke Medical School, a debris-filled ravine was transformed into a national architectural treasure enjoyed by people from around the world.
