Duke University Hospital Opens to Patients

Duke University Hospital opened to much fanfare and drew wide regional media attention when it opened in 1930. The $4 million hospital included 400 beds and 31 full-time employees. A.C. Lee, the Duke engineer who oversaw the project, was ceremonially registered as its first patient. “He took a great pride in that building,” wrote the Durham Sun. “And no man connected with the University was happier than he was when it formally opened for business.”
