Duke Swimmer Wins First of Three Gold Medals at Summer Games

On July 29, 1984, Duke student Nancy Hogshead won the gold medal in the Summer Olympics in the 100-meter freestyle, tying with Carrie Steinseifer with both hitting the wall at 55.92 seconds. It was the first tie in Olympic swimming history. Hogshead went on to win two more goal medals and a silver at the Olympics in Los Angeles.
