Creation of the College of Engineering

Duke creates the College of Engineering, its third undergraduate college, on June 3, 1939. Civil engineer William H. Hall, a 1907 Duke graduate and faculty member since 1915, is its first dean. The engineering student body grows to 201. Five new professors nearly double the engineering faculty to 12. In 1943, the college holds its first commencement, with its graduates all heading out to take part in wartime efforts.
