The Duke Department of Surgery will host the Centennial Summit on Data Science in Surgery, featuring speakers from Duke Surgery and Duke AI Health, to examine the future of data science and innovation in surgical application.

The keynote address will be delivered by Ozanan Meireles, MD, Vice Chair of Innovation, Duke Department of Surgery.

Dr. Meireles joined the Duke Department of Surgery in January 2024 as the department’s first Vice Chair of Innovation.

Dr. Meireles is an internationally known authority in surgical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He came to Duke from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where he worked for more than a decade and specialized in minimally invasive surgery while running the MGH Surgical AI and Innovation Lab (SAIIL).

Subsequently, Dr. Meireles brought SAIIL to Duke as director of the lab. He also works within the School of Medicine as Surgical Director of Duke AI Health and advises on surgical AI applications emerging in the Health System.

Ozanan is a native of Goiás, Brazil. He earned his medical degree from Sao Paulo State University in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He came to the United States for a residency at Michigan State University and continued with a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, and then a Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at the University of California San Diego.
